Website Design Basics

Seniors are doing it, homemakers are doing it, and even kids are doing it before they turn 10 years old - it is website design, and emerging technology is putting it at everyone’s fingertips.

A Changing Technology

Website design used to be reserved to only the experts. Geeky guys who stayed at home and sat in front of a computer screen 23 hours a day understood how it was done and the language used to do it. Nowadays, the supposedly geeky computer guys are no longer in control. Now, with technology making website design as user friendly as it can possibly be, anyone who wants to can build their own website.

If you still aren’t comfortable designing your own website, or if you simply don’t have the time, there are many companies available that help individuals and business build their own websites. These companies usually interview the potential client and then build several prototypes for the client to consider.

Today’s technology makes it possible for these companies to offer their clients all of the bells and whistles of the larger companies’ websites. This type of technology is making it harder and harder to tell the really big companies from the smaller ones when just looking at their websites. Big or small any company, or individual for that matter, can build a website that is impressive.

The Basics of Creating Your Own Design

But, what if you don’t want to use a website building company? What if you would prefer to do it on your own? Technology allows even the most inexperienced user the opportunity to try. The widely used website company MySpace.com offers this opportunity to everyone who registers on their site. Because of companies like MySpace, even kids are learning to build a website in easy steps.

So how do you get started? First, you need a concept, an idea, of what you want your website to be. You don’t need expensive software or special tools or even a college education. The items you will need to build a website are simple. You will, however, need some basic computer skills.

Basic computer skills are necessary with web design because it gives you an idea of where to begin when designing your website. Again, it is not necessary to be a computer scholar, but you do need to know the basics. Also, you will need a personal computer. You could do all of this on your local library computer, but it would be quite inconvenient and you will also need access to the Internet. Most libraries limit or restrict Internet access.

The Advanced Aspects of Web Design

Now that you have the basics down, you will also need a free HTML Editor. A HTML Editor is a web page construction tool. Luckily, there are different ones available for free. You can purchase one instead, but why do so when you can get one for free?

You are also going to need a place a place on the World Wide Web to publish your page. There are many domains out there that you can pay for. But, again, there are many free ones available to choose from. If you go into your search engine and type in “free domains” you will get a list of where you can go for your little corner of the Internet.

The steps to publishing a web page are easy. You have to first decide what you want on your page. Then, you need to design it. You can do this using the basic software you received with MS Office, if you have that on your computer, or you can download a free web page design program and download your HTML editor.

Once you have completed the downloading of the software, it is time to build your actual site. Most software programs offer step-by-step building instructions. If yours doesn’t, you can download ideas from the Internet. If you are just learning, however, it might be a good idea to go with an already made template because it is not quite as complicated. In addition, web page templates can be found all over the Internet. All you need to do is find one you like, download it, and fill in your information.

Choosing a Location for Your Web Site

After you have built your web page, it is time to find it a home. Do your research and keep in mind that you want to place your website where it will get the most traffic. For instance, if you are a writer, you might want to publish in a domain with other writing sites. Once you have found a home, simply copy your pages to the web server. Again, most domains will have instructions as to how to do this.

Finally, promote your website by telling everyone about it. This can be done in a number of ways, such as by using keyword content and cross website promotion, which is placing a link on someone else’s website to your.

Building a website can be fun and it can do wonders for your business. So take that step out into cyber space and carve out your piece of the Internet.
