An Inside Look at Business Resources
In an ideal world, money would not matter to a business. Instead, they would be able to make their dreams a reality without worrying about such things as money, time, labor, and company property. Unfortunately for business owners, we do not live in an “ideal world,” and managing business resources is a necessary part of any business owner's job. This is true regardless of he is the owner of a multinational business conglomerate or a corner bakery, although the bakery owner most likely has to budget resources more tightly.
The Importance of Resource Management
Resource management is necessary to protect the commercial potential of your business enterprise. Lack of resources can hamper efforts to release advertisements, products, services, and support. Without resources, your company will quickly stumble into disrepair. If that happens, your only choice will be to minimize losses and disband the company.
Managing Capital
Money is perhaps the easiest to manage if you know math well. Basically, one should work to keep expenses lower than capital – generally well below the capital in order to allow for emergencies. You should make sure your emergency fund is constantly filled with enough money to handle one instance of the biggest emergency your company can face. If your biggest emergency would be a broken computer, then make sure you have enough emergency funds to buy a new one – even if it is not top-of-the-line when compared to your old one.
Managing Time
Time management is also essential in keeping a business from going under. Generally speaking, things should be done efficiently. Delays should be avoided if possible, and any unavoidable delays should be quickly rectified. If any machines break down, they should be fixed immediately so as to avoid disruption of the average working time. Storerooms should be well stocked and organized so that any needed supplies can be retrieved easily.
Managing Labor and Machines
Labor should be balanced. You should not hire more people than necessary to keep the company running. At the same time, employees should not be overworked. If they are, it can cause severe problems, both for you and for the employee who has been overworked.
Any machines your business requires also must be well maintained. Of course, breakdowns will happen no matter what precautions you take. But, the more precautions you take, the less likely this is to happen. Mistakes in procedure could bring a system crashing. A paper jam could cause several minutes of frantic, agitated talking as technicians struggle to get the paper out of there. Printers could run out of ink. So, if you often print things, make sure to have a supply of ink cartridges.
Machines should also be adjusted so that nobody who acts with an ounce of logic will get hurt. This will help in all areas of resource management. Money will not be spent for costly machine repairs and medical bills from the employee. Always keep in mind that if you do not make the workplace safe and an accident does occur, you will be held accountable for the accident. And, it goes without saying that productivity will drop if there is an injury in the workplace. Morale, which, while not a resource, is still another big player in productivity, will also drop significantly.
Managing Software
Any software your business needs should be properly supported and all computers should have enough disc space to keep your programs and your system operating smoothly. All files should be routinely checked for viruses. If you routinely use the Internet, you should also have a firewall installed to protect you from hacker attacks. A poorly-maintained computer can easily bring your company to a halt.
Managing Work Space
All your company's offices, warehouses, and any other buildings you have should be properly built for their task. Electricity should be working consistently. You must be sure each building is bearable for long periods of time, as your employees will be there for eight hours daily. In addition, an office should work like an office. Any furniture should be kept safe and none should be permitted to be in a position to injure a worker.
Resource management is a very difficult skill. To be effective, you must be able to balance productivity, time, safety, and expenses. You should be able to function without any problems for extended periods of time without relying on external sources of income, such as loans. All business should be properly managed by workers who are well-paid and trustworthy. One must use their resources effectively.
